2024 Projects
We've identified key areas of focus for this year's efforts in Malawi:
Malawi has one of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the world. According to the World Health Organization, the infant mortality rate in Malawi is estimated to be 53 deaths per 1,000 live births, while the maternal mortality ratio is 574 deaths per 100,000 live births. These high mortality rates are attributed to various factors, including inadequate healthcare facilities and personnel, limited access to essential medicines and medical equipment, poverty, and cultural and traditional beliefs.
Our goal is to provide Nkhoma Hospital and several rural clinics with common medical supplies, including gloves, bedding (maternity blankets), over-the-counter pain-killers, and other necessary equipment.
While malnutrition is a well-known issue among children in Malawi, it is also a significant problem among the elderly population. According to the World Health Organization, malnutrition affects approximately one in five elderly people in Malawi, with many suffering from protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies.
We aim to support a village of primarily elderly residents with their initiatives to enhance food security. Through a local community organization that provides for this group in need, we will help with a small irrigation project and small business venture: a bakery. The group sells vegetables and baked goods in the market and then provides food, blankets, cooking supplies, and resources for medical needs among the village’s elderly residents.
